The Western Basalt Plains is regarded as an endangered ecosystem.
We aim to reveal the unique beauty, diversity and significance of this endangered ecosystem by specialising in species related to grasslands such as grasses and sedges, bulbs and lilies, wildflowers, shrubs, trees, groundcovers and even aquatic plants suitable for ponds, dams or wet spots.
Newport Lakes Native Nursery (NLNN) was set up in 1999 to accommodate the growing demand for indigenous plants in suburban areas. The nursery boasts an extensive species list and experienced and passionate staff that can assist with species selection, gardening and landscaping for the suburban dweller and more extensive projects such as school, community and corporate plantings. The nursery also specialises in a wide variety of indigenous aquatic plants.
NLNN works to enhance corporate, school or community workshops on sustainability and environmental responsibility by providing presentations that focus on sustainable and water wise gardening, conservation and the importance indigenous flora as habitat.
NLNN has also established a school based education program helping to teach primary school aged children the importance of our local ecosystems and encourage them to think about and participate in conservation based activities.
NLNN has been involved in encouraging suburban land owners to create habitat by planting indigenous plants for critically listed species. In the last 20 years NLNN has contributed to approximately 5 hectares of private land being revegetated in the West of Melbourne. This has provided additional habitat for numerous species including the Growling Grass Frog, Native wasps and Bees and a variety of Grassland Skinks.
